Apicoectomy
Apicoectomy
Root canals have a very slight chance of getting infected. New or recurrent decay, calcification, and undetected accessory canals can all be the cause of a re-infection. If you face such a problem, conventional root canal treatment may no longer be able to treat it. At Doral Dental Specialty Center, we help overcome the problems associated with such a failed root canal treatment with an apicoectomy. Dr. Adriana Echenagucia, our specialized Endodontist in Doral, FL, and her team will handle the procedure to restore your dental health.
What Is an Apicoectomy?
- It is usually used when conventional root canal is not likely to be fully effective
- Removes infected tissue in the root tip and fills the infected area to retain the structure
- Complete healing can take up to 6 months
- After-care can include prescriptions for pain and periodic cleaning
When Will You Need Apicoectomy?
Usually, root canal treatment is all that will be required to save a tooth with infected or injured pulp. However, a root canal is sometimes not sufficient for healing the tooth. Our endodontist, Dr. Adriana, may recommend an apicoectomy in such a scenario.
Such endodontic surgery can be helpful in locating hidden canals or fractures that may not be visible on X-rays but cause pain. Some of the scenarios when our Endodontist in Doral, FL may suggest an apicoectomy can include the following:
- Blocked Root Canal: We will consider performing an apicoectomy when a root canal may be blocked due to a fractured file created by a previous procedure. We take all measures to prevent the spread of damage to the adjacent teeth.
- Root Branches: A tooth’s root has many tiny branches that can make root canal therapy complicated to perform successfully. Sometimes the inflammation persists because it is not possible to clean and seal these tiny branches. We will suggest an apicoectomy procedure in such a situation.
- Curved or Narrow Root Canal: When the root canal is curved or narrow, it becomes difficult for our Endodontist in Doral, FL to reach the apex. An apicoectomy may need to be performed in such a situation to help diminish inflammation and the infection from spreading.
At Doral Dental Specialty Center, we provide comprehensive dental care as our Doral office has multiple dental specialties. This allows our patients to receive all the dental care they need in one place.
