Gum Grafting
Gum Grafting
Whenever there is recession of the gingiva, your body will lose its natural ability to fight against bacterial activity and decay. When we have patients with gum recession that becomes a problem, we may consider gum crafting as a reconstruction treatment. If there is minor recession, there may be enough healthy gingiva to protect your tooth. In such cases, gum grafting may not be required. However, when the recession has reached the mucosa, this treatment is most often required. At Doral Dental Specialty Center, we provide complete range of dental care and treatment solutions.
Benefits of Gum Grafting
Gum grafting is a periodontal procedure and offers numerous benefits. This includes:
- Reducing Sensitivity: The exposure of the tooth root can cause severe sensitivity when you eat or drink hot or cold foods. With gum grafting surgery, we can cover the exposed root, restore gum health, and reduce sensitivity.
- Improving Gum Health: Periodontal disease has a very fast progression rate and can destroy your gum tissue if not treated in time. Our gum grafting procedure can help stop tissue and bone loss. It can prevent further issues and protect the exposed roots from decay.
- Improving Appearance: Periodontal disease causes inflammation and gum recession. Gum grafting can be performed to make your teeth look shorter, more pleasing, and symmetrical. Our periodontists can also enhance and augment the surrounding tissue to help improve your appearance.
Types of Gum Tissue Grafts
We can help determine the right type of gum tissue graft based on your condition. This includes:
- Connective-Tissue Graft: This is the most common gum grafting procedure. Our dentists will remove a small piece of tissue from under the roof of your mouth and place it around the exposed root.
- Pedicle Graft: This involves moving gum tissue from an area close to the affected tooth. This option is chosen only when enough gum tissue is available in the surrounding area.
- Free Gingival Graft: If you have thin gums, we will usually consider this form of gum grafting. It involves taking a small piece of tissue from the surface of your palate and attaching it to the affected area.
