When gum disease is left untreated, it can progress and turn into periodontal disease. The gum tissue can become inflamed and move away from the teeth. This creates crevices where bacteria can develop. This can further lead to the development of infections in not just the teeth, but also the jawbone.
The infection can cause the deterioration of your teeth, gums, and jawbone. When infection occurs under the gums, brushing or flossing cannot reach the bacteria. When this occurs, our dentists can recommend scaling and root planing, also known as deep cleaning. When to Get Deep Cleaning?
During the dental examination, our skilled dental team will check your gum pockets. If we find the pockets to be more than 3 mm deep, we may recommend scaling and root planing. Once the gum pockets become smaller, bacteria and plaque cannot form.
We suggest fixing an appointment with us, from the moment you experience the early symptoms of gum disease. Some of these symptoms include:
- Chronic bad breath
- Tender, inflamed, red, or receding gums

When the disease is detected early on, we can reverse your symptoms with one or more scaling and root planing treatment. When gum disease progresses to advanced stages, such as periodontitis, we may require you to go through more extensive treatment.

Root planing works by smoothening the surface of the roots and removing tarter, various toxins, and bacteria. It works by allowing the gums to heal. The smooth surface will further prevent bacteria from developing.
Scaling and planing is a non-surgical procedure and can be performed without the need for anesthesia. It is a painless procedure. If you have advanced gingivitis, it may be required to numb the area to provide complete comfort. Deep cleaning is typically performed one section of the mouth at a time. This is important to provide enough time for healing.
