Gentle Dental Cleanings (prophylaxis)
Gentle Dental Cleanings (Prophylaxis)
Gentle dental cleaning or prophylaxis is a cleaning procedure for thoroughly cleaning the teeth. At Doral Dental Specialty Center, our Pediatric Dentist in Doral, FL provides prophylaxis to stop the progression of periodontal disease and gingivitis. Besides providing you with a healthy mouth, oral cleanliness is important for treating a wide range of oral and dental issues.
Need for Prophylaxis

Fresh Breath
- Periodontal issues
- Rotting food particles building up under the gum line
- Potential gangrene due to gum infection
Detecting Health Problems
What to Expect During Prophylaxis Treatment?
- Supragingival Cleaning: We will thoroughly clean the area above the gum line to remove any buildup of calculus and plaque.
- Subgingival Cleaning: Calculus is removed from the gum pockets and from under the gum line.
- Root Planing: We will smooth out the tooth root to remove any remaining bacteria.
- Medication: An antibiotic cream may be applied inside the gum pockets. The cream promotes healing and eliminates any discomfort.
- X-Ray: X-rays may be performed to learn about the condition of bone and gums.
We suggest getting gentle dental cleanings twice a year. It is recommended more often if your child has periodontitis. It is important to realize that gum disease is not fully reversible. Prophylaxis is, however, an effective treatment option to stop the damaging effects of gum disease.
Plaque formation on the teeth is a regular process. So, it is important to have your child receive gentle dental cleanings at Doral Dental Specialty Center on a regular basis. We suggest keeping up with the schedule to maintain clean and healthy teeth.
