Frenectomy
Frenectomy
Frenums are muscle tissues that attach different soft tissues in the oral cavity. These muscles are there to connect the tongue to the floor of the mouth or to connect the upper and lower lip to the gums. When it is required to remove or loosen one or more of these bands of muscles, our Periodontist in Doral, FL, Dr. Martin Fernandez-Feo, can consider a procedure known as frenectomy.
When is Frenectomy Required?
A frenectomy is a Periodontal Surgery in Doral, FL that involves the removal or repositioning of a band of tissue that may be causing a negative impact on the gum tissue or the tongue. Our periodontist may require you to undergo this procedure in the following scenarios:
- Buccal Frenum: In this case, a piece of tissue has a high attachment to gum tissue, creating a pull on the gums whenever they function. This increases the chances of a recession in the gum tissue or a relapse in the tooth movement.
- Lingual Frenum: Proper tongue movement or position may be affected when a band of tissue forms under your tongue, requiring correction.
What to Expect During the Procedure?
A frenectomy is a soft tissue treatment that restores a natural and full range of movement to your lips and tongue. At Doral Dental Specialty Center, our Periodontist in Doral, FL can perform two types of frenectomies:
- Lingual frenectomy
- Maxillary labial frenectomy
